Creating an accommodating work environment that is inclusive and inspirational requires a deep understanding of how today’s diverse workplace population thinks about their j-o-b. As evidenced by the national social unrest of 2020 and the built-up frustration of being cooped up inside for the past year, it would seem evident that the days of a job being something one does only in exchange for money are well behind us. Professional engagements must have purpose, and that purpose must align with the individual’s moral compass. For a workforce that increasingly sees work as a ‘higher calling,’ extrinsic rewards alone, proffered by financial or other materialistic incentives, lack the intrinsic components necessary to satisfy today’s employees’ deep, personal needs.
